This is an example of a "soft" segmental rolling pattern, popularized by the likes of Gray Cook, PT. These low threshold exercises are often disregarded and deemed ineffective; possibly due to the fact that they are commonly performed incorrectly. These types of things, when used appropriately, can be wildly effective in decreasing fear avoidance to spinal movement and reorienting a patient/athlete with the their body.
