Last night, Shiva, a Great Horned Owl being treated here at the Alaska Raptor Center, reached the end of her rehabilitative journey and was released back into the wild! Shiva came to the Center in November 2019, from Haines, Alaska, after getting tangled in some duck coop netting. We released Shiva up in our muskeg after the sun had set, since Great Horned Owls are nocturnal. | Alaska Raptor Center

Narwhal, a Great Horned Owl and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, working on scale training with one of her handlers. Narwhal weighs a healthy 1,200 grams! Great Horned Owls have the most diverse diet of all North American raptors. Their prey range in size from tiny rodents and scorpions to hares, skunks, geese, and raptors. They eat mostly mammals and birds, especially rabbits, hares, mice, and American Coots, but also many other species including voles, moles, shrews, rats,
