Nesting Birds – Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)

The Northern Lapwing is a wader that nests on farmland and other areas with low vegetation. Unfortunately, its eggs and chicks are at risk from farming machinery during nesting season in fields. That’s why ornithologists collect data on lapwing nesting sites and work with farmers to help protect them, for example by marking nests in the field.

If you look closely at the below video you would see at 47 seconds, the herd stop their movement down the bank of the Mara River because a small lapwing (bird) makes itself bigger and vocalizes, stopping the herds progress, the herds turns back and starts crossing again. At 104 seconds they turn back and at 112 seconds it has completely turned around. The Lapwing has its nest made on the ground and is protecting its eggs from a stampede! WOW 🤩 😳 😮 🤯!! Lapwings are elegant wading birds, easily recognised by their striking black-and-white colouring, green iridescent feathers, and their trademark wispy crest.
