Happy National Snake Day! While these beauties are not exactly snakes, these Rote Island Snake-necked Turtles (Chelodina mccordi) definitely resemble their fellow reptiles. This species is a type of side-necked turtle, meaning it doesn’t retract its head and neck straight back into its shell. Instead, they lay them along the front of their body. These turtles evolved this striking serpentine neck to aid them in hunting and striking at small prey like amphibians, crustaceans, fish, and insects. T
